Monteverde Excursion

After a long week of volunteering, the ISA high school group traveled to Monteverde, which is about three hours away from Heredia. At the beginning of the excursion we went to a treehouse restaurant for lunch. There were also souvenir stores that we were able to shop at when we were done eating. After lunch we went hiking in a rain forest. As we were walking closer to the top of the mountain it started pouring down raining.

Everyone was soaked and a little muddy but it was all worth it, as we all had a lot of fun. We checked into our hotel, El Establo, which was very beautiful. Many of us hopped right in the shower to wash off all of the mud from the hike. The bathroom was very nice and the beds were comfortable.

Before dinner we went on a night hike though the rain forest. It was absolutely beautiful. The tour guide showed us a variety of animals, plants, and insects. We were able to see a toucan and a giant ant hill. Additionally, we saw a beautiful view of the valley that we couldn’t see during the day. In total the hike was 2 hours in the beautiful Costa Rican rainforest.

Dinner was a buffet style with a variety of delicious Costa Rican food. After dinner everyone hung out for a bit then prepared for the next day.

On Sunday morning, we all woke up bright and early for breakfast and then headed out to go zip lining. Many of us were shocked to learn that it was longest zip line in Latin America. After getting our equipment on, we started out on practice cables until we got the hang of it.

A mixture of fear and excitement filled the group as we then reached the longest cable which hung over a beautiful scenery of mountains. The last adventure was an optional ‘tarzan swing,’ which was one of the more frightening parts of the canopy tour.

After the tour we hopped on the bus and headed back to the hotel. We quickly packed our things up and grabbed a bite to eat before heading back to Heredia. Monteverde was a wonderful experience as we all enjoyed the time to get to know each other better and relax from working hard the week before.
